The three albums I'm showing on this picture are often being refered to as a trilogy! They are all three solo albums by Springsteen (without the E-Street Band) on which he mostly plays all instruments himself (he allows some guest musicians on some of the tracks). They are also all three mainly acoustic albums! And.....they are all three great! I talked about 'Nebraska' and 'Devils and Dust' in previous posts...
'The Ghost of Tom Joad' is basically a follow up to 1982's 'Nebraska'. 'I'd pick up where I'd left off with Nebraska, set the stories in the mid-90's and in the land of my current residence, California.' Said Springsteen. He based the song on the character of the same name from the book 'The Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck! Did anyone read that book? The truth is he was mostly inspired by the movie adaption by John Ford in 1940. I have to be honest that I haven't read or seen the movie myself but the song is a true beauty in line with the more quiet songs from the 'Greatest Hits' compilation ('Blood Brothers' and 'Secret Garden'). Although the album was critically aclaimed, it didn't chart as well as his previous albums, but Bruce had anticipated on this, 'I knew that The Ghost of Tom Joad wouldn't attract my largest audience. But I was sure the songs on it added up to be a reaffirmation of the best of what I do. The record was someting new, but it was also a reference point to the things I tried to stand for and be about as a songwriter.'. Two years later it would win the Grammy award for 'Best Contemporary Folk Album'.
Do you have these albums? And which one is your favorite?
