(1/2) I didn’t think my German was that good. I took some independent classes during high school in the US (at an institute a town over from mine, as it wasn’t in my high school curriculum); my dad was so happy and proud about that. And then I was offered a scholarship by the US government to live/work in Germany for one year in my early 20s. I learned German “intensively” during this year. Though I had a lot of British and American friends during this time, and probably didn’t practice as much as I should have. Anyway, I didn’t think I “really” spoke German anymore (or ever?)….until I had to. I was thrown into planning a funeral and communicating with all his friends and family in Germany during the aftermath of his sudden and shocking death. And somehow, I did it. I understood almost everything and communicated exactly what I needed to. I say “almost” because there was one instance at the funeral home wherein we were talking about ashes. My dad had instructed that he wanted an urn burial in the local cemetery. But I asked the funeral director if we (my sisters and I) could also have 3 small urns as well, to take back to our homes. Then, there was a massive debate about legality, borders, restrictions, policies. I understood maybe 30% of the big debate. But then the conclusion was…yea, you can. While that was great news, I still will always remember that I’ll never understand the massive debate preceding this conclusion. So, after the funeral my sister flew back to the US with 2 urns (one for her, one for my elder sister). The 3rd stayed with me in Europe and of course the main, larger urn was buried in Andernach during his funeral.

[[For Gpa]] 💙 That sunset was an important one. I never think to take time lapse videos of anything (I usually forget to take photos all together) but I took one that evening and I’m so glad I did.
We were camping on a friend's property near Stanthorpe. Her mum made a lovely comment about how “spiritual” that sunset seemed to be; her dad saying that Mother Nature was putting on quite the show for us that evening. It was true. I’ve never seen a single cloud dumped rain as the sun set behind it. It was pretty amazing for sure.
I didn’t know it at the time, but my Grandpa was passing away peacefully on the other side of the world, with my aunty holding his hand. We had no cell service, so two days later when we hit the road again, that’s when I found out he was no longer suffering.
We stood on this hill and enjoyed what turned out to be one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen at the same time as he comfortably made his way to… wherever we go when we die. I love looking back on these photos.
Paul Matheson Briggs was buried yesterday, with family and friends around to celebrate him.
Tomorrow would've is his 89th birthday ♋ A true Cancerian, through and through - he truly set the standard for how strong and influential a kind and gentle man can be. He rrrreally cared about people. I’m so grateful I had some of the best years with him.
I love you Gpa. Thank you for all the wonderful memories of You.
💙

🔥 ARTWORK STILL AVAILABLE 🔥

Reposted from @thesingfamily How do we keep ending up here?
We have been trying to find the words to express our thoughts regarding Uvalde. There are so many people pointing fingers at each other, but at the end of the day, we think most of our sadness comes from the fact that WE ALL have failed those babies.
In the last few years, we have seen marches, walk outs, and cities burned TO THE GROUND for the sake of change. There were 27 school shootings with injuries or deaths this year alone. TWENTY-SEVEN?!
It’s always the SAME CYCLE… shooting happens, we get into heated debates in the comments… and eventually… WE FORGET… and nothing happens. Are we doing everything in our power to force Congress to make effective changes? The answer is no. There will be no change until we demand it.
If we want to see a change, we strongly urge everyone to take the midterm elections seriously. Do your homework and research the proposed policies that are being presented. DO NOT FORGET! It’s in forgetting that we continue to fail.

I've attended more funerals since arriving in Lviv than during the rest of my life combined. This morning, Igor Malets, aged 59, was buried in the Field of Mars, the new area reserved for military funeral art Lychakiv cemetery after the previous section reached capacity.
In the afternoon, a lecture was held for a group of people, mainly refugees who had fled the East and South of Ukraine, on recognising stray munitions and explosives. With deactivated and dummy items on hand to allow children to spot and avoid lethal items such as butterfly mines and mortar shells, it was a sobering experience. The families present all hope to return to their homes soon, but knowing that they're taking their families back into a region awash with deadly military debris must be an unbelievably hard decision to make.
