Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta
📍Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italia 🇮🇹
The Cathedral of Parma is for the last 900 years a place of art, history and sacredness. Here are preserved the bas-reliefs by Benedetto Antelami, the romanesque art heritage and the grand frescoes by Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio. Entering into this place means living the faith, opening up to art and discovering one of the most precious treasures of the city. The Cathedral, also known as Duomo di Parma, can be considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Italy.
An interesting fact is that it was erected by the heretic bishop Cadalus, who later became antipope Honorius II. The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1117 and it was rebuilt and completed in the 12th century. The facade is made from blocks of sandstone and decorated with a row of loggias and two tiers of galleries. The porch on the main door is supported by lions, built in 1281 by master stone-cutter Giambono da Bissone. The octagonal dome, mounted on a crossing tower is quite unusual for a medieval church. The main feature of the interior is the fresco of Assumption of the Virgin decorating the dome, executed by Correggio in 1526–1530.
The Assumption of the Virgin showcases the Virgin Mary amid a flurry of figures accompanying her toward heaven. Jesus Christ is at the center of the cupola, descending from the light. Technically speaking, the fresco is considered to be a masterful work whereby light and shadowing are employed to guide the viewer’s perspective.

When not at the Lviv railway station, often I walked by the Latin Cathedral in Lviv (also called the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption). A beautiful church built in the 15th century in the city's center, less than one minute from the Garrison Church, where almost daily funerals were held for soldiers killed in the Russian war again Ukraine. As the Russian bombing increased, the seven statues surrounding the cathedral became covered for protection. Christo-wrapped art, the strange unpleasantness of war.
