John is a regular at the showers. He, as we all do, has a story. Some days he shows up and is quiet. Other days he isn't quite so quiet. Yesterday he seemed kind of antsy, ready to get his shower on. Usually we give our guests about 10 minutes to shower. When we have about a 2 hour waiting list and a 300 gallon holding tank, you do the math. Anyway, John got his new underwear, socks, a clean towel and washcloth and his hygiene kit. He lit up and said you won’t even recognize me. So people are coming and going. We are listening and sharing and honestly, I forgot what time John went into the shower. It seemed like forever. I knocked on the door and asked if he was ok. He whipped open the door and said, "Do I look ok?!" I was speechless. "WOW!" was the only sound I could muster up. Then I was able to regroup and tell him how impressed I was. He looks like a million dollars. People keep asking me where he was going. Honestly, I don’t know and it doesn’t matter. This individual has been on the streets for a long time. He has good days and bad. He may even have some mental stress. I do not know because I am not a doctor nor a judge. I am just a guy with a dog and a trailer. The one thing I do know is this man, human, God’s child and my brother went in that shower in pieces and came out whole with dignity and pride. He wanted the world to see who he is and what he is here to do!!! You rise, John, and show these people you deserve respect. You deserve to be heard! You deserve a safe place to lay your head at night and you have the right to enjoy the same freedoms as any and everyone else in this free country! 🚿
