Joleen became a guest of Show Up in the very beginning of this pandemic. We saw her just about every day. She became part of the Show Up family. As we all know, there were good days and bad. Even if she came crying or having a bad day she said she always left feeling better. She knew we were there for everyone but we always made her feel like we were there specifically for her. Our program is designed for our guests to feel just that way. She was Instrumental in helping us become the program we are today. Joleen challenged us to find ways to help others on the street. She had friends who needed things and knew we were there to help. She trusted us and came to us when she or another person needed something and wasn't sure we would help them. Joleen knew if we couldn't do it, we would find a way to get it done. These pictures are of a card and a letter she wrote to me and my family because she truly appreciated the work we are doing for all of our unhoused guests. This means more to me than I can even express. There is a reason I have kept these.
Our goal as Show Up is to serve our unhoused brothers and sisters. To recognize them as people, humans, citizens of Sacramento and children of our Almighty Father. Show Up is a very small organization that provides showers, food, and clothes to our homeless, yes. However, we are so much more than that. We are believers in Christ and we know that no matter what you believe, we all know that every person out there on the street, in a tent on A street or on the river, like Jolene is Somebody's Someone. A mother, daughter, sister or wife of somebody who has to learn their Someone is no longer with us. For those Somebody's, I can tell you that Joleen is free of the pain and suffering she was facing daily on earth. She had good people who prayed with her sometimes several times a day. May she rest in peace and may we find a way to get through this homeless crisis as well as COVID pandemic soon so this type of tragedy does not continue and stops taking the lives of our brothers and sisters.
Remember, Jesus Christ was considered homeless. What do you think all those who judged him felt when they found out he is the son of God
