HISTORICAL PROJECT @westminsterfashion
As a person of mixed heritage I have often found it hard to define my identity. As a designer I haven’t explored my heritage because I have found it a very difficult conversation with myself; not wanting to appropriate culture that wasn’t mine, but then I remember all the food my Grandmother cooks for me and I realised it was the small things like this that I could relate to and I became fascinated with learning about that part of me that is still tied to India. I wanted to capture something that I personally could relate to. I have spent time fishing in both England and India, much like the Kingfisher. This beautiful bird was a focal point for me; something I took heavy inspiration from. I then brought into it traditional clothing and the functionality of the fishing tackle and clothing I had become so familiar with. The end result was a three piece outfit, consisting of:
(Top to bottom)
Fishing Bivi Jacket, featuring a fold down seat in the back yolk of the jacket, modular bag attachment and can be changed into a bivi. Optimised for a fisherman stalking a stretch of river.
Mesh Kurta, featuring asymmetric Nehru collar, chest pocket and asymmetric shirt front.
Cargo Dhoti’s, featuring wing pockets and modular bag attachment.
