A friendly funk album for a Saturday coffee spin: Average White Band - ‘AWB’ (1974). . I didn’t know these (by origin) Dundee funk and soul masters are the fifteenth most sampled band in music history. . Of course ‘Pick Up the Pieces’ was a dancefloor killer and number one hit. Their first album sold poorly, but when they relocated to LA and got Arif Mardin to produce, this follow up - also called ‘The white album’ - was a million seller. . I have always loved that early seventies funk- soul sound. Very uplifting and this album is full of blue eyed soul and funk gems. . For this week’s Progwednesday I have picked the unexpected return of Porcupine Tree with ‘Closure / Continuation’ (2022). . It’s an album that grows on you. It sounds Porcupine Tree as we know them, but the band have moved on and explore new rhythmic refinements and tighter sounds. And explore you must when you’re truly prog. . ‘Harridan’ opens in a tight and 5/4 groove with Gavin Harrison excelling. And for those who pine for the melancholia of ‘Lazarus’ there is the ballad beauty of ‘Of the New Day’. . There’s a mix of tight, rocky prog that feels fitted next to Opeth’s later work. And there’s the treasured alienation feel PT is famed for on tracks like ‘Dignity’ or ‘Walk the Plank’. . And then it all ends with the complex and nautical atmospheres of ‘Chimera’s Wreck’. . Spin ‘Closure/Continuation’ once and you wonder. Spin it twice and you marvel. Spin it thrice and you dive into adorable depths of musical brilliance. . My Sunday spin. The Beatles- ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. (1967). . Hadn’t played this one for a very long time. At the uni where I work a colleague of mine and I run a support group for students who, well, could use some extra support with their graduation assignment. One of the students said: ‘it feels like a club and with a little help from all these friends I can make it.’ . It just made me look up this old Dutch Parlophone pressing again and play it. Beatles are always positive energy. Don’t you ever think that every other Beatles song ends with ‘and you know it’s gonna be alright’? I do. Enjoy your Sunday.
