Had a few magical nights with the synchronous fireflies at Grandfather Mountain. Very cool to see it on the cover of @washingtonpostmag to close out summer

Our Fall Travel Issue’s cover story explores a relatively recent phenomenon in the travel business: fireflies tourism. Leigh Ann Henion (@leighannhenion) traveled to parts of the Great Smoky Mountains, in North Carolina and Tennessee, to observe synchronous fireflies. And in doing so, she offers a moving meditation on our changing relationship to light, when, particularly during the pandemic, we have been in a sustained state of hypervigilance, falling under the influence of phones, computers, and tablets like never before, “seeking entertainment that might numb me, news that might serve to comfort me.” In a time of global confusion, Henion argues, we’re trying to find answers that do not exist, and in seeking out these fireflies and their light, she is hoping to break the spell that screens have cast. spent several days following @joebiden ’s new running mate @kamalaharris last year for @nytimes, and one snuck on the front page what feels like a decade ago
Over the past 10 days I’ve been visiting an encampment that sprung up in Charlotte. As shelters have limited capacity due to the pandemic, scores of tents have popped up and filled with homeless neighbors in walking distance of the city center. For a lot of residents, it’s the first time this homelessness issue has been so visible. I first stopped there as part of a larger COVID-19 story for @nytimes, and went back many more times with a wonderful writer and friend, @michaelngraff who is working for @charlotteagenda
Eventually I decided to set up a tripod and make long exposure portraits to obscure the identities of some of the folks I met who are in a vulnerable spot. These are a few of those people and pictures.
The story is really wonderfully written, and the link is in the bio.
some pictures of Charlotte last week for @nytimes on reopening phase one in NC. #socialdistancing is still very easy on a weekday morning in #CLT. many thanks to @crista.chapman for the gig :)
