The first time I saw a whale, I was kayaking and freediving in Hawaii. A mom and calf emerged out of the blue. Right place right time. They took a breath, looked at us, and disappeared again. The quick seconds gave me tears back on the kayak. This encounter was pretty life changing to say the least.
I was happy to not have a camera for that moment.
This picture, I took a few years later in Moorea, where we got similarly lucky in the ocean! These two whales actually hung out with us for 45 minutes! My camera died after about 5 minutes.. so a large majority of the time I’ve spent with whales has been without a camera. Not mad about that :) but definitely keeping some extra batteries on me next time.
A pressed flower dress designed by @barbaracruzmorales and this photo, entirely her vision. She talks about it, she does it. Several trips to fabric markets. She picked the perfect flowers at the river and patiently pressed them. Then delicately crafted this beautiful dress with the idea of bringing the dried flowers life. Also, it’s not easy to look so graceful underwater. So inspired by her, I just have to brag!
A portrait of me in my elusive fish-state by @barbaracruzmorales
Barb and I have been shooting a ton of film and lately it’s been really fun being on the other side of the lens for a change. Lots more river themed film to come..
Finding colorful days at the river
As often as possible
Im glad to take time for only our selves.
We learn to play so that we may escape time. And everything else.
There we swim in the splendors of art
While the world fades away

“Gifts from the Sea” is out now, link is in my bio!
I’m thankful for @barbaracruzmorales for pushing me to do this film and for the heroic @jr.stitt for writing the most beautiful music to it.
Dropping “Gifts from the Sea” tomorrow.
It’s an experimental short film I made about potential gifts we could discover along the way of life.
Put a lot of thought into every frame and word so I’m excited for you guys to see this one 🎥
You could feel the vibrations from the whale’s song in your chest. Using only our hearing, we swam through the endlessly perfect blue following the song as it grew louder and louder. After so much anticipation and swimming we finally stumbled on one of the most beautiful creatures I’ve ever seen. Time froze for just a minute. We watched as the whale gave us the most memorable show; flopping, turning, breaching, it was the display of a lifetime. Only to disappear into the depths once again, leaving us wanting so much more.
A few months ago I had the opportunity to travel to Chile to capture timelapse footage of the night sky and to give a personal touch on my journey to see the night sky at its best. @beautifuldestinations just posted the creator takeover I made on their IGTV, so be sure to head over and check that out! I’ve met so many people in my life that have never seen the Milky Way with their naked eye. Ultimately my goal for the video is to inspire more people to venture out of their familiar worlds and into nature. To experience true silence and to really feel what it’s like to stand and look up at the universe. It’s a feeling like no other. Trust me it’s worth the journey whether that’s driving an hour or two away from your city or making the trek to Chile 😉 #bdteam 🎵: @thecosmicquest
