The first time I saw a whale, I was kayaking and freediving in Hawaii. A mom and calf emerged out of the blue. Right place right time. They took a breath, looked at us, and disappeared again. The quick seconds gave me tears back on the kayak. This encounter was pretty life changing to say the least.
I was happy to not have a camera for that moment.
This picture, I took a few years later in Moorea, where we got similarly lucky in the ocean! These two whales actually hung out with us for 45 minutes! My camera died after about 5 minutes.. so a large majority of the time I’ve spent with whales has been without a camera. Not mad about that :) but definitely keeping some extra batteries on me next time.
