✨ This project is heading fast towards the finish line! And I am so excited for it! I have done a lot of additional work to the body, correcting some proportional errors like the outline of the raised section in grey, adding in important lines like the rim at the bottom of the body, and of course adding in a lot of little details like handrails, door handles, rain gutters, windscreen wipers and so on and so forth. Feel free to compare the pictures with my last post about this locomotive to see everything that happened. During this step of creating the model modifiers also proofed to be useful in some cases. So, I created the rain gutters as flat planes and added in the thickness automatically. But most of the detail work had to be done by hand. It is not particularly difficult but does require a good portion of time and patience.
And with that I call the body mostly finished minus the decals, of course. Therefore, the next two steps are to continue work on the undercarriage as well as the roof furniture and last but certainly not least to create the logos and lettering for the locomotive! So, once again keep your eyes open!

✨ In the third step of creating the famous BR 103 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn it is finally time to pay attention to the undercarriage, including the three-axled bogies! Typical for a modern machine are the countless little pieces that make up the bogies. Springs, sand boxes and guard irons are only the most obvious ones. Without a big main frame like you would find on older locomotive types – the frame here is barely visible, tugged behind the body – the overall look is made up by all the small components. The difficulty here lies within abstraction. Due to the scale and the plan to eventually 3D-print this model there is a hard limit to how fine details and how thin walls can get. But just to increase the width of a lid can be enough to throw off the proportions completely. Therefore, things have to be simplified and changed around on the model not only to make it physically work, but also to faithfully preserve the appearance and the spirit of the prototype, which can get lost very easily if you are only concerned about detail and accuracy. That being said though I am far from being done with the bogies. There are still a lot of details to be added and others to be reworked. This once again, is simply a first sketch to give me an idea of what we are working with and what areas I need to study and better understand on the prototype.
But before we spend more time with the bogies and the undercarriage it is time to fill in other gaps of the locomotive. Most notably the pantographs as well as the roof furniture. So, keep your eyes open for this next step!
