In the recent Zomato ad titled “Man Kiya Zomato Kiya”, shows Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan ordering food from ‘Mahakal’ when he was craving a ‘thali’ so he ordered from Mahakal. The Mahakaleshwar or Mahakal temple of Shiva in Ujjain is one of twelve `Jyotirlingas' which attract devotees from across the country. This hurt the religious sentiment of many and sparked outrage on Twitter. Temple priest demanded a public apology from the company.
Zomato, a food delivery giant, later issued a clarification and said that the advertisement is no longer running. They further explained that the ‘Mahakal’ thali advertisement was part of their pan-India campaign of promoting local restaurants. The Gurgaon-based company said, “Mahakal Restaurant is one of our high-order-volume restaurant partners in Ujjain and thali is a recommended item on its menu".
Last year similar kind of Diwali ad was released from Cadbury “notjustacadburyad” starring Shahrukh Khan, which was well received by the audience.
