Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a guided tour of rare Photobooks by Women in the @nypl collection, organized by @10x10photobooks with tour hosted by Elizabeth Cronin, Assistant Curator of Photography of The Miriam and Ira D. Wallace Division. The exhibition of Women’s photobooks continues with a reading room on the 2nd floor which is open to the public without appointment through Saturday. If you're lucky you will catch a talk from one of the photography curators and librarians. Cheers to 10x10 and NYPL for highlighting these important works! Yesterday was another one of those magical days in NYC. What an honor to sit at the Penumbra Foundation’s @penumbratintypestudio and have my portrait made by @geoffreyberliner. Thank you for including me in your archive of tintypes of visiting artists. An enchanting experience to say the least. Swipe to see the process! Afterwards I ran to @rizolibookstore to see @jesstdugan and @sashawolfprojects speak about Jess’s process and beautiful book “Look at Me Like You Love Me” published by @mack_books. Their work is deeply considered and stunning and I love the title so very much. And then I headed downtown to @launchphotobooks to celebrate my good friend @amy_touchette new spectacular book “Personal Ties.” Amy’s portraits are potent and full of joy. She was in a lively conversation with @_true_stories_ and writer @thenotoriousrbj. Joi’s reading of her text from the book brought us to tears. “As viewers, we are guided in a cadence of landscapes that feel foreign and places that are unwelcoming. We are shown a far off distance, but never able to access it. There is so much beyond the viewer's physical sight. We are shown that which is never-ending: the horizon on the ocean, fog which conceals a pathway. Vast visual oceans of color submerge the viewer. These voids are not places to rest but a place to plunge and free fall. A Few Magical Days in NYC: 1)Last night @Penumbrafoundation. Thank you Leandro Villaro and @geoffreyberliner for inviting me share my thoughts on photography and big thanks to everyone who came out, there were so many photographers in the crowd, quite spectacular really. I felt the love 💗 📸 @amy_touchette 2)Printing BIG with Ken Allen @Brooklynprintworks. Overwhelmingly exciting seeing this photograph at this size. This print is for a new commission. I’ll share photos of it once its installed and framed. 45x60.” 3-7)Last Friday morning, we joined @aperturefnd for a gallery walk with @thesarahmeister and @brendanembser (with thanks to a push by @elisabethsmolarz 😊). We stopped at @BruceSilverstein, @YanceyRichardsonGallery, and @PaceGallery and heard inspiring stories by the gallerists themselves. The special surprise was an impromptu visit by Emmet Gowin. He shared stories behind the making of the photographs on view and spoke about the lives photographs and what he learns from his pictures, sometimes many years after they were first printed. It was magical and heartwarming and even a bit emotional. They each spoke for 15 mins about their forthcoming books. Both talks were inspiring, albeit quite different in their approach. I left feeling empowered and energized and excited about the power of photography. 9-10) I won the lottery to Harry Potter Cursed Child on Bway. (With thanks to @rachelpapo for the info!). In “Down in the Forest, We Sing a Chorus,” I look to the natural world to appreciate systems of reciprocity. These black and white photographs of body and nature look closely at the symbiosis of nature's ecosystems and how connection and communication foster growth and resilience. They emphasize interdependence, transformation, and fragility while considering that everything has a purpose and needs support. They view the critical value of the environment, what we can learn from its strengths and bonds, and how future generations depend on its existence.
