Looks like summer has really settled in Pohnpei. In three days we covered so many locations in perfect ocean boating conditions. Three more weeks until fall starts. Usually this kind of weather comes in earlier in the year but it has been different under La Nina for the last two years and as we are getting into its strongest and third year of La Nina. The winds died out later than usual and we hope they stay lighter through the season. For the last two years tides have been higher than forecasted making high tides look like king tides and last, hardly any typhoons close to us. On an El Nino year you could see three typhoons spinning at the same time above. For the last two years we hardly saw one typhoon a season (usually August to early November is our typhoon season). What will happen with the surf in 2022/23, is a guess. I have seen it go both ways under La Niña. As today different forecasts are showing a powerful typhoon developing below Japan and a few smaller lows to the north moving east/west, a total counter flow to how these lows move. Change of season is in the air and it's looking great. #pohnpei#pohnpeisurfclub#ppass#vacation#surftrip
Yes, borders are open and Pohnpei is getting busy again, busy like the North Shore in 1950, or Byron Bay in 1960, but with fast internet connection.
Most people coming to Pohnpei today (actually all) are here for work in many different fields.
Many of the hotels are booked and rental cars sold out!
Again, my advice for anyone coming for the next surf season or any other reason is, book early. Put in a deposit, lock in your days.
Vaccination requirements (no comments on this please as I don't make these rules) are the first single or double shots, plus a booster. No PCR test needed at this time.
As today Air Niugini is not flying from Australia so you would have to find an alternative route through Japan/Philippines/somewhere in Asia to Guam and Pohnpei or Australia/Hawaii/Pohnpei.
Not the cheapest or easiest way, but the only way to get to Pohnpei from Australia at this time.
People flying from the USA and Hawaii are at an advantage now. Not only are there daily flights to Pohnpei, but it looks like there won't be many surfers coming from Australia for now (crowd advantage).
Could be the most uncrowded season start we had in years.
Like someone said in the comments, open, but not open! @wadegoodall shot by @johnbarbs671#pohnpei#pohnpeisurfclub#ppass#surftrip#surf#barrels#perfectwave
Borders are now open for travel to Pohnpei.
I just came in by myself!
A up to date vaccination card and negative PCR test taken no longer then 72 hours before the trip required.
My advice, people who have credit with us, book your dates now.
People who want to book, put a deposit in and lock on your dates.
As we mentioned before there is a high demand for rooms and limited availability, not by surfers but mostly people who had business to do in Pohnpei for the last 2 two and a half years.
They are all coming back. #pohnpei#pohnpeisurfclub#ppass#surftrip#divetrip#vacations
At the size most waves in the world start getting fun, around 6 ft, Pohnpei starts to get scary. At least for 90% of the surfers. Lucky for the 90% (me included/no discrimination) these days only happen a few days a year when the other 10% will show up to enjoy it. By the way this 6 ft wave is around double to triple overhead. #pohnpei#pohnpeisurfclub#ppass#surftrip#barrel
It is no news the oceans you swim in are being trashed and the fish you eat is radioactive and full of chemicals. Or you keep enjoying it, or you have to do something about it. Which one are you? @time#pohnpeisurfclub#ppass#surftrip#cleanup
