On the final day of #pride month, we look back at our “Authentic Selves: The Beauty Within” initiative with 2021–22 Artist-in-Residence @arcostanzo. This spring, Anthony led workshops for middle and high school students at @casitamariabx for their Hip Hop & Storytelling curriculum, exploring how opera and classical music can be vessels for understanding and connecting to emotions.
Our partnership with Casita Maria continues this weekend, with a FREE performance on July 3 featuring NY Phil musicians and Casita Maria’s BronX BandA — a nine-piece jazz ensemble — as part of @lincolncenter’s Summer for the City. Learn more at the 🔗 in bio!

One week ago, the NY Phil returned to Central Park for Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer. After two years of cancellations, the community welcomed the Orchestra back with open arms, with some audience members arriving even before the set-up crew to reserve their spots on the Great Lawn. Re-live the magic of the day in this highlight reel, and we hope to welcome you in October when the brand-new David Geffen Hall opens! 🎆

Our final Concerts in the Parks performance took place at @stgeorgetheatre in Staten Island today! The program honored Juneteenth with a libation ceremony (2nd photo), Wynton Marsalis’s “A Fiddler’s Tale” Suite, jazz selections, and art songs & spirituals. We lift up our voices and sing!

A chilly and windy evening — enough to topple a few music stands pre-concert — didn’t stop a crowd of over 10,000 from filling the field of Cunningham Park for Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer in Queens! Thanks to a hard-working and creative team, the Orchestra presented a program that was shorter, because of predicted rain, but just as sweet. The series of outdoor concerts concludes tonight in @prospect_park!

Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer returns on Tuesday! Take a look back at some of our favorite Parks memories through the years:
1. Fireworks bring the first-ever Central Park concert in 1965 to a powerful close.
2. The program for the concerts in 1966 featured contralto Marian Anderson narrating Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait.”
3. Dean Dixon became the first Black conductor to lead the Orchestra during Concerts in the Parks in 1970.
4. A happy group of picnickers awaits the concert in 1977.
5. 800,000 people attended the 1986 Central Park concert celebrating the rededication of the Statue of Liberty, setting a new Guinness World Record.
6. Mayor Ed Koch went backstage and mingled with musicians during the 1987 concerts.
7. Mother and child cellists joined in a performance of “Goin’ Home,” a setting of the famous Largo melody from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” at Cunningham Park in 2017. This was part of “The New World Initiative,” a citywide immersion aimed at introducing this piece to new audiences. (📸 by @chrisleephotonyc)
8. Just as in 1965, fireworks conclude all outdoor Concerts in the Parks. (📸 by @chrisleephotonyc)
Celebrate the return of this iconic series with us next week in all five boroughs!
