Here’s a compilation of some of the shots I designed and animated with the lovely folks in @rangerandfox for their recent Microsoft spot, …set to an 8-bit cover of Toto’s Africa just because I can and none of you can stop me… (oh I’ve also looped the video twice just because it would be criminal to cut those vibes that early…
Process frames I made in the early design exploration days for a super fun Microsoft project I recently worked on with my good buds in @rangerandfox …these looked pretty tasty animated so will add a few clips of them soon ✌️
When my buds in @rangerandfox came knocking for some pitch frames for FX’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics, I sat down, cranked up the tunes (a LOT of Gwen Stefani and the Scissor Sisters) and made these. We cooked up two routes, on this I focussed on fun, typographic abstractions, throwing lyrics in the blender to make this poppy 3D music soup 🤤…
Some look-dev sketches and tests for the Hublot |Square Bang spot for @studiotendril …including a fun typographic rubicks cube concept that we ultimately felt was a little too playful (but I still love so here it is). The early stages of any of these projects are almost always the most rewarding and the AMOUNT of beautiful tests and styleframes that were created for this was staggering.
Well now, it's been a hot minute since this was launched into the world but it's time to give the gram a bit of love and shout about this wonderful project for Hublot I helped make with my new and sickeningly talented pals in @studiotendril 🙌
…There were more cubes rendered and squares bothered in the making of this than you can shake a spendy swiss time-piece at! I was on art-direction and some look-dev duties for this slick spot alongside an all-star ensemble of extremely talented individuals (all of whom are credited on Tendril’s project page). Particular hat-tips to the excellent direction by @gabrielrcha in the hot-seat and fellow art-director @tomcrate
The full animation, sit back and let it drift past with Jesse's @agentsdelfuturo gloriously moody score 🎧 👍 This is cropped quite a bit as the full anamorphic version is aggressively wide to maximise the impressive screen size of the Living Canvas. 🚲 🌚
Should be said that this really is a shadow of its actual self and is designed totally specifically for once singular enormous outdoor display along the canal at Wilton Park, Dublin
Stills of the Living Canvas animation in-situ and some details of the final piece.
The animation was designed to mirror the dominant commuter flow of the cycle path along the canal, flowing downstream toward the IFSC / Grand Canal with the morning rush and switches to a night version that follows cyclists home in the evening, flowing back up-stream from east to west. 🧭
Following a mind-numbingly hectic run to the end of the year it's nice to finally be able to sit down and share some pieces from the large-format outdoor display piece(s) I created as part of the Something in the Water installation curated by @algorithm.ie and @iput_real_estate_dublin Hoping to share a little more of this soon but for now here's a selection of images from the Day and Night versions of the piece mashed together with some of the imagery and works that inspired / caused me to create 2x two and half minute one take animations consisting of little more than disembodied bicycles and other such accoutrements floating through the aether. Looking forward to sharing a full version of this soon replete in all it's musical glory as crafted by the inimitable @agentsdelfuturo

Some stills from the BCLC animation. One of the most rewarding aspects of this project came from a series of community workshops organised by BCLC to gather feedback on how we had intended to approach the project. These very directly influenced the tonal direction of the script along with the visual direction for the animation. Together with the centre we went through quite an exhaustive design process to arrive at an animation and style that felt unique to the project and appropriate in its tone. We aimed for space that was broadly approachable, and wasn't 'just another explainer video', something that had a bit of heart to it without being too emotionally charged with any direct or literal representation.
Always a nice moment when you can talk about a project that you've had to sit on for a while, particularly one of this nature. I was approached way back in 2018 to start talking about a small animation that would eventually launch and accompany a larger suite of educational content for parents and families around the very sensitive and hugely stigmatised topic of child protection. Commissioned by the amazing people of the Ballymun Community Law Centre, this animation was the result of many direct workshops with parents, social care professionals and community law experts.
This project was led by Barry Fitzgerald (Just Process Belgium) Voice-over by the wonderful Sally Foran @sallypal VO engineer / recording by Liam Yelen @ Locky Butler Audio. Thanks to Ciara Murray and Frank Murphy from BCLC for all their input and guidance over the project.
We went through a fairly extensive block of design iterations to arrive at the final key-visuals for the @edenspiekermann Nacero project. I’m very fond of some of the alternatives we explored (we were probably about 75% of the way there at this point). The final route was definitely the strongest, much cleaner, singular compositions that were far more flexible as working assets, but these are still some fun glassy bubbles of reflective niceness…
