One more little clip from I. Miss. Raving.-Stills don’t do this beautiful human justice. @just_dak_
.
“It stemmed from the idea of what it means to be a queer, gay, black Zimbabwean,” he explains. “Having a sense of identity or looking for it, and about self-discovery and navigating my way through different situations. No matter who we are and where we are, one of the most fundamental human experiences is connection. Connecting with others and the beauty that comes as a result of all these connections made. It’s a marriage of dance, music, identity, personal experiences, freedom of expression and most of all, yearning for connection with other humans.” - Dak @just_dak_

Regram from @austcine The story of 'Birthday Boy' really caught my attention. It's not often you see a lead character who's FTM (born female and transitions to male). Let alone a film that explores this identity at an all-girls private high school. It raises interesting questions of binary gender and the violence that can occur when undermined in hyper-gendered environments, like in single-sex schools that push a very heteronormative idea of being a woman or man.
This film had incredible community support and a mostly queer crew. It was great to see Leo cast a trans actor to play a trans role and many trans actors throughout the film.
Leo and I went for a reasonably naturalistic look but wanted to make the school scenes feel as uncomfortable for the audience as they did for our lead. So we played with the shutter angle to sometimes blur or sharpen the action with the intention that the audience would feel something is off but couldn't quite tell you why.

Repost from @austcine. Princess’ was a really interesting short to shoot. It follows a mother's story as she spends the day with her daughter before she has to give up custody of her. Eden, the director, wanted the film to have a feeling of as though we were peering into that person's life whose conversation you heard a snippet of as you stepped off the bus. But also capture the love between a mother and daughter.
To shoot the film we decided to use very long zooms, up to 900mm, which allowed us to observe the characters from quite a way back in the street and the real world to seep into the film with members of the public spontaneously interacting with the cast. We shot in Dalston, a vibrant and diverse part of East London that contributed to the energy and rawness of the film. Being able to keep a distance also helped our young actress (who Eden street cast, as this was her first time in front of the camera.
Our approach to lighting was to modify the practical lights of the location slightly but mostly working with what we had rather than introducing the film lights. We thought this would add a rawness and compliment the idea of peering into worlds.

Repost from over @austcine. I was back in Sydney recently when Adrian heard I was in town and sent me the script for Dwarf Planet. I was immediately captivated by the story of a shy 18 year old boy who hires a male escort while his parents are on holiday. It struck me because it said so much about how gay men value themselves in relation to their bodies. But it also spoke to how fragile the masks we show to the world can be. So fragile that they can be dismantled with something as simple as a story about Pluto.
We cropped bodies and faces to create uncomfortable energy between the two characters. I worked closely with production designer @michaelpricedesign to choose just the right red for the curtains so once they were closed, it would add to the uncertainty and tension in the images.
I had so much fun shooting this short and it was super nice to work on set back home again!

Some of the most influential people in my career have been women. My teachers, mentors and collaborators. They taught me to shoot, and they took a chance on me when I was just starting out. Diversity is about including people who feel there’s no place for them in camera. Everyone should have the right to create culture regardless of sex, gender, sexuality, race, religion, neurodiversity or class. #whoisinyourcrew@austcine

More diversity means more perspectives. As DPs we have the power to make it happen.
