Repost from @austcine. Princess’ was a really interesting short to shoot. It follows a mother's story as she spends the day with her daughter before she has to give up custody of her. Eden, the director, wanted the film to have a feeling of as though we were peering into that person's life whose conversation you heard a snippet of as you stepped off the bus. But also capture the love between a mother and daughter.
To shoot the film we decided to use very long zooms, up to 900mm, which allowed us to observe the characters from quite a way back in the street and the real world to seep into the film with members of the public spontaneously interacting with the cast. We shot in Dalston, a vibrant and diverse part of East London that contributed to the energy and rawness of the film. Being able to keep a distance also helped our young actress (who Eden street cast, as this was her first time in front of the camera.
Our approach to lighting was to modify the practical lights of the location slightly but mostly working with what we had rather than introducing the film lights. We thought this would add a rawness and compliment the idea of peering into worlds.
