๐ฅฃ๐ฐ COST OF LIVING ๐ฐ๐ฅฃ
BIG THANK YOU @nrcnl for this article, and Annemarie Kas who came along to one of our 'Cooking On A Budget' community courses last month. Kas addresses the #CostofLivingCrisis and what lies ahead when prices are set to rise in October - capturing the meaning of why we do what we do!, and some truly beautiful shots by Justin Griffiths-Williams - swipe for snippets and have a read (link in bio).
"Brenda Bridges loves the dishes she discovers at Made in Hackney. "Especially that you can actually make everything without packages and bags." She now deals with food in a different way, she also says, she used to throw away quite a lot. โI learned here that you can freeze almost anything. Bananas, vegetables, spices. For example, you can put herbs in such a container for ice cubes and always take out what you need.โ
"Student Oleander Agbetu is already trying to save some money, but that is not easy for her. During the corona crisis, she had to stop her business โ she offered craft courses that didn't work online. โWe only survived thanks to the food bank and Made in Hackney.โ At the course she found the best tip: cook in large quantities. โYou eat the rest a few days later or put it in the freezer.โ She brought the noodles in bowls to take home."
A reminder that we do free courses for the community alongside our paid classes - from which the money goes back into being able to do ones open to locals like these.
We will also be changing our prices - introducing a new Workshop Format from September, head to our website to have a look at what weโve got upcoming! - Including: Vegan BBQ Summer Feast with Brazilian Chef @my.supper; Vegan Italian with @markeeeebeeee; Family Cooking on a Budget, plus Fermentation with @nordic.nutrition and lots more!

๐ฃ COST OF EATING CRISIS ๐ฃ
.
Last week food campaigner & chef @jack_monroe 's tweets about the rising cost of budget food staples caused a media storm - and rightly so! ๐ฏ
.
The rising cost of food - and other living essentials - fuel, energy (50% plus rise!), accommodation, NI contributions - is frankly terrifying. โ
.
With so many households across the UK already relying on food support services, the impact of these price hikes on just managing households will be cataclysmic.
.
If you shop in a supermarket and buy mainly budget items, your weekly shopping bill spend that could previously feed your household for a week, will now feed you for half a week. If you're lucky. This will bring more hunger, more suffering, more ill health & more inequality.
.
The fact that the same levels of inflation are not being applied to more luxury food items says it all. We really aren't, and never have been in it together.
.
How have rising food prices affected you? What do you think should be done about this? We want to hear from you. ๐ฃ
.
PS- Jack Monroe you legend! It's not easy putting yourself out there on social media. We see and appreciate you!

๐THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT ๐
.
In the excitement and adrenalin of a crowdfunder what we're doing and why can get lost. THIS right here is what it's all about. ๐ฎ
.
It's about our neighbours, our friends, our family, our elders - us - all being able to get the support we need when times are hard. ๐ฒ
.
It's about being a safety net that the government should provide but don't. Catching people for a few weeks - or years - until things get better. ๐
.
There's pernicious but untrue ideas that when support is on offer opportunists jump in who don't really need it. Or that if you provide support to one group, you're somehow taking away from another. โ
.
These are distraction narratives to stop people coming together to demand change. To stop us asking the real & most important questions about why there's so much inequality in the UK in the first place.
๐ก
.
We need to ask these questions of our MPs, our Councillors & the businesses we give our money too. But while we're seeking answers and much needed change, we need to be there for each other. ๐
.
12 hours on the #noonegoeshungry2022 crowdfunder to provide 70,000 meals in 2022 to our community. Let's do this people. ๐คฉ
