This is the most revealing piece I have ever worn. Baring not just my arms but my entire back, and not just showing but highlighting the one part of my body I have battled most vehemently in my life. In a fitting, we thought about pulling back, covering the spot I once knew as the handle. But in that moment, I saw what it has become. I saw its beauty, and now I let myself show it to you. @luchen_ny, who created this for me for the Tony Awards, offers a brand mission statement: “Growth, atrophy, stasis, pulsation, the human body shape changes with time. Luchen’s design, draping starts from the structure, partially affixes to the body but eventually disengages, thus creating garments that embrace the instability caused by time while acting as three-dimensional objects.” Beauty that emerges on the changing body from the instability caused by time. That is the beauty of now that we step into and celebrate. The fabric, a metallic jacquard, is printed with a photograph taken by Lu Chen and manipulated until it became an organic series of colors and patterns. The laser cut fabric feathers represent the pixelization of our eye, how we see. The calendar label on the back of the pants marks the day the team completed the garment. The silver fingers are called Creator Fingers, a literal creation of self. Welcome to the #TonyAwards! For this uniquely special night celebrating the extraordinary resilience, ingenuity and sheer talent of our Broadway community and our city of New York, I asked the brilliant emerging designer @luchen_ny to create a piece for me that would capture and reflect this moment. Lu Chen herself is an expression of the singular passion of now. When her Parsons thesis project was cancelled in the early days of the shutdown, she and her collaborators completed it on their own and then launched this new label. An act of optimism in the face of darkness. In this piece, I see the Phoenix that is all of us rising. I see the structural melting into the organic, the technological into the natural, the human into the animal. A piece that dances away from definition as it evolves over and around the body. It is something different from every angle, as are we all. These yellowbrick road pants have been waiting their whole lives in my closet for this night. On the eve of #JudyGarland’s 100th birthday, I moderated an intimate conversation with the great Judy interpreter @rufuswainwright and the completely amazing and wise @mollyringwald (my 10 year-old self was on the floor!) at @92ndstreety. The pants silhouetting the iconic romp to Oz by the iconic @virgilabloh for @louisvuitton, paired with a Gucci does Emerald City blouse was, I thought, the extent of the fashion tribute.
