Otterly adorable 🦦 One of Britain’s best-loved mammals is set to receive a boost with the sequencing and release of the first high-quality Eurasian otter genome.
.
The genome will be published through Wellcome Open Research, where it will be openly available for use by the research community.
.
The Cardiff University’s Otter Project to make the most of the wealth of data stored in DNA archives 🧬
.
This will be used to better understand the biology of otters and inform ongoing conservation efforts.

Repost from @danaugirang using @RepostRegramApp - On World Pangolin Day, DGFC rescued, tagged and released a female pangolin that was surrendered to Sepilok. Pangolins are the most trafficked species on the planet and we need to do everything in our power to save them. Our Pangolin Conservation Officer abd PhD student @elisa_panjang is committing her life to make sure that pangolins will survive in the long-term.

Today we’ve been showcasing some of the inspirational women working in the School of Biosciences in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. 👩🏾🔬
Our final woman featured today is Professor Paola Borri.
Based in the School of Biosciences, Professor Borri researches connections between the life sciences and physical sciences. Her work involves developing novel microscopy technologies, building unique new microscopes in the lab and working with lasers to analyse biological systems.
Professor Borri recently teamed up with choreographer @jackphilpdance to create a contemporary dance project that will help to bring her research to a new audience.

Up next in our list of female scientists for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is Dr Mafalda Costa.
Based in the School of Biosciences, Dr Costa is a Research Associate for @thefrozenark – a joint initiative that is working to save the DNA and viable cells of the worldʼs endangered species. Dr Costa works specifically for the CryoArks Biobank - the UK’s first national zoological biobank, which offers researchers across the UK access to tissues, cells and DNA from endangered species and other wildlife, which can be used in their research and for conservation planning.
Head along to @cardiffsciencefestival next week to meet Mafalda and @thefrozenark team to find out more about their work.

Next on our list to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is decomposition / fungal ecologist and Biosciences lecturer Professor Lynne Boddy.
Since the mid-1970s, Professor Boddy has researched the ecology of wood decomposition and has pioneered work on the fungal community structure. During this time, her research group has made major advances in understanding the effects of invertebrate grazing on fungal foraging, communities and nutrient release.
Professor Boddy has also been a keen advocate for science throughout her career, participating in several engagement activities aimed at communicating her research to a much wider audience, including UK Fungus Day, the Natural History Museum's 'Big Nature Day', and the BBC 'Summer of Wildlife'.
In 2019, Professor Boddy was awarded an MBE for services to Mycology and Public Engagement in Science.

As part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are celebrating some of the many inspirational women that make up the School of Biosciences.
Dr Shiby Stephens is a clinical anatomist and an integral member of the Wales Centre for Anatomical Education, based in the School of Biosciences, which provides anatomical training for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and medical and allied health professionals.
Dr Stephens is also a lecturer in Biomedical Sciences and Anatomy, and has lead responsibility for the School’s Biomedical Sciences undergraduate degree programme, supporting students to develop their talents and become the next generation of scientists.

Today we’re celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science by showcasing some of the outstanding #womeninscience working in the School of Biosciences.
Next up is Dr Catherine Hogan. Based in Cardiff University’s European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute, Dr Hogan’s research is focused on improving understanding of the early stages of pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is a lethal disease with the worst prognosis of any cancer, and early detection is key to improving survival.
Dr Hogan and her team of researchers are working to understand the fundamental biological events that lead to the early stages of pancreatic cancer in order to identify biomarkers that could be used for early detection. It is hoped that this work will lead to the development of early detection tests for the future, which could ultimately transform the way we diagnose pancreatic cancer.

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 👩🏻🔬
To celebrate, we’re showcasing some of the outstanding women in the School of Biosciences whose contributions are helping to address some of the world’s greatest challenges.
First up is PhD researcher, Sophie Watson. Sophie is investigating how the gut health of flagship Arctic species such as polar bears and wolverines is being affected by climatic and anthropogenic stressors in the Arctic.
Keep an eye out for more #womeninstem throughout the day. And don’t forget to post your own photos of inspirational women in science - whether that’s your friends, family, colleague, lecturer, or even yourself! Tag us in your post and we’ll be happy to share it on our page.
