I’ve just discovered that this was Stanley Spencer’s last painting… I can’t remember seeing it before. It’s called “Miss Ashwanden in Cookham”, and was painted in 1958. Although his 17-year-old neighbour is the main subject matter here, he paints his beloved Cookham in the background, along with the patterned chair fabric, in typical detail - even the dug up road. The painting appears in the Warwickshire volume of The Public Catalogue Foundation’s collection of oil paintings in UK regional galleries: over 80 large hardbacks to choose from at just £10 each or six for £30 (free UK delivery). I already had the Manchester Vol ll, and a further six books arrived today - all 13kg worth! This is Mary Fedden’s “Still Life with Lemon and Auriculas”, painted in 1995 using watercolour, gouache and pencil. With its bold colours, there’s a lovely simplicity and real freshness about it. The yellow of the cut lemon leads to that of the petals, and then on to the sun. The lines suggesting the table take us to the distant hills. Single pots of auriculas are often displayed on shelves in ‘theatres’.
