I’ve just discovered that this was Stanley Spencer’s last painting… I can’t remember seeing it before. It’s called “Miss Ashwanden in Cookham”, and was painted in 1958. Although his 17-year-old neighbour is the main subject matter here, he paints his beloved Cookham in the background, along with the patterned chair fabric, in typical detail - even the dug up road. The painting appears in the Warwickshire volume of The Public Catalogue Foundation’s collection of oil paintings in UK regional galleries: over 80 large hardbacks to choose from at just £10 each or six for £30 (free UK delivery). I already had the Manchester Vol ll, and a further six books arrived today - all 13kg worth!
