Cooking is not only an essential life skill. It can also be a great way of encouraging your child’s reading, writing, maths and artistic skills as well as helping them develop their scientific, historical, cultural and nutritional knowledge. Not only that but it also encourages their organisational skills and their confidence and independence.
📚 Reading
Encourage younger children to recognise letters such as ‘t’ for tomato on shopping lists and in recipes. Older children can be encouraged to follow recipes by themselves.
📝 Writing
Drawing or writing down the steps in a recipe or writing out a shopping list are both great writing practice.
➕ Maths
Encourage your child to measure out ingredients or set timers. Even young cooks can look for numbers in recipes or count how many spoonfuls of ingredients are needed.
🎨 Art
Laying the table, decorating cakes or creating a beautiful salad are all opportunities for your child to express themselves artistically.
🏛️ History
Take the time to talk to your child about the history of each ingredient while you are preparing it.
🔬 Science
A kitchen is a great place to conduct experiments. What happens when you mix two ingredients together? How long does the perfect boiled egg take?
🌍 Culture
Food can offer a window into different cultures. Discuss where in the world different recipes come from and ask your child to think about how where they lived has influenced their cuisine.
🍎 Nutrition
Explain to your child the benefits of each ingredient to their health. It may even encourage them to eat more vegetables!
✏️ Organisation
Cooks need to be organised. They must ensure the oven is preheated and that the equipment that they need is washed and ready to use.
👍 Confidence and Independence
Let your child take the lead in the kitchen and you will be helping them to develop vital life skills.

Working from home is set to stay. Read on for our top tips on how to create a workspace that is not just pleasant to work in but is also organised too.
🛋️ Furniture
Avoid the temptation to purchase a desk that reminds you of a traditional office desk and instead opt for one that blends in with your home decor. Plenty of storage is important so bear this in mind when selecting your furniture, lots of shallow drawers are preferable to deep drawers so that it is easier to find what you are looking for without having to rummage.
✏️ Have a system
Creating yourself a to-do file and a completed file will help you avoid getting in a muddle and at the end of the day they can be easily tucked away if you prefer your working area to be uncluttered.
💱 Personalise
While your desk at work may have had a few personal photos, you were limited as to how much you could actually personalise your workspace. As online video meetings have become the norm many people will only ever meet you on screen so as long as the view they can see looks professional feel free to personalise the rest of your area. This may be through hanging your favourite artwork on the walls or by indulging your love of plants by surrounding yourself with greenery.
🤔 Think outside of your office
If you have lots of paperwork that you need to keep but which you don’t need daily access to then consider buying waterproof plastic boxes to store it in. These boxes can be kept in the shed or your garage so that you are not constantly having to work around the excess paperwork but can access it easily when you need to.

Need some tips to help keep you cool this week? These are our six favourite tips to help you stay cool while the temperature soars.
💧 Hydrate
Make sure that you consume plenty of fluids. Coffee and tea lovers may wish to swap their cuppa for a glass of water while the weather is so hot as just like alcohol they are diuretics so will make you want to urinate more.
🏚️ Close your curtains
Keeping your windows and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day will stop the sun from heating up your home like a greenhouse and stop the hot air from outside blowing into your home.
👣 Soak your feet
Placing your feet in a bowl of cold water (the colder the better) is a great way to cool down your whole body.
🌱 Mist yourself
Use a plant mister to regularly mist yourself and your pets for an instant cooling effect.
🚫 Avoid heavy meals
Instead, opt for foods that have high liquid content and choose to eat little and often instead of having a large meal.
🤣 Mad dogs and Englishmen
There is a reason that the Spaniards have a siesta. It is to avoid the hot midday heat. We’ve all heard the saying “only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.” Take heed and instead make the most of the cooler evenings by staying up later and resting during the day (if your work schedule permits it).
