This restaurant and chef category is comprised of locally owned restaurants that have timeless appeal and are beloved regionally for quality food that reflects the character of its community. Leading up to the 2022 #jbfa ceremonies in Chicago, we'll be highlighting each winner in our video series.
Meet Florence Kemp, owner of Florence's (@florencesrestaurant) in Oklahoma City, OK! After learning the benefits of cooking with farm fresh ingredients from her mother, Florence saved up enough money as a server to open the restaurant in 1952. Today, the restaurant is nearly 70 years old, and Florence Kemp is still proudly working—along with her daughter Victoria—serving the same recipes her mother taught her, with a few new ones sprinkled in, and all of it what she calls "good country food for the soul."

Since 2012, our Chef’s Boot Camp for Policy and Change has trained and inspired over 400 chefs across the country. After two years of virtual boot camps, we were thrilled to host a cohort of 12 chefs in March at @thehorseshoefarm in Hendersonville, North Carolina! Over the course of 3 days, these chefs received policy and media training so they can advocate for food system issues in their respective communities. The James Beard Fellows program, presented by @capitalone, was first introduced in May 2021 and re-envisions the potential of the historic James Beard House as a hub of professional development for talented emerging chefs. After ten months, we have successfully wrapped the pilot of this program with nine incredible alums!
To celebrate, acclaimed chef member of the Fellows advisory committee Deborah VanTrece (@chefdeborahvantrece) will be preparing a special four-course dinner alongside three of our previous Fellows including Theodore Coleman (@cheftheodorevictor), Nashali Rivera (@nashali.theshef), and Kencito Vernon (@thewealthbuildingchef), made possible by our partners including @fohinc.
