Happy Juneteenth everyone 🖤❤️💚—I spoke with NPR about using poetry to connect to the many histories and meanings behind this day. You can read more about the holiday at the link in bio. Here’s to family, to firsts, to freedom 🖤
I’m the writer I am today because of the teachers I’ve had who uplifted me. Now, on @MasterClass, I’m so excited to pay what I’ve learned forward and be a resource for anyone who is interested in harnessing the power of poetry. You don’t need formal training to write, all you need is curiosity and courage. I hope this class can help you to find your own voice and to become a powerful force of language and change. ✨🌎
In that same spirit, I’m thrilled to announce MasterClass will be working with Writing Change, the initiative I started in partnership with Estée Lauder, to distribute free MasterClass annual memberships to organizations who dedicated to advancing literacy. 📝
So what are you waiting for? Grab your pen and let’s get to work. I’ll be with you every step of the way 💛✍🏿

I wrote this poem after the massacre in Uvalde, Texas. Though it was hard to find the words to write poetry about horrific, unintelligible tragedy, I was moved after a few thoughts I posted here turned into $1 million successfully raised for @everytown for Gun Safety in just 3 days. The one thing I know how to do when times are dark is to write. And that’s what I’ll keep doing, even when told poetry can never make a difference against a gun. As Audre Lorde said, “poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action.” If this poem speaks to you, speak back—act. A good place to start is following @everytown & texting BOLD to 644-33. To everyone who has already shared and donated, thank you, thank you, thank you. I see you. I love you. I cherish you💛💛💛 @nytopinion
Americans—you know enough is enough. If you do anything today, let it not be just to grieve, but to act. Follow & donate to @everytown to help prevent gun violence and save lives, and check out their website (everytown.org) to take more action.
“Be unafraid. We will not be delayed. We will not be masquerade to the tale of a handmaid. We will not let Roe v. Wade slowly fade, because when we show up today, we’re already standing up with the tomorrow we made.” I’ve been thinking a lot about these words I wrote for this poetic performance with @Nowthisnews years ago, and I still believe it with every fiber of my being ✊🏿💛 p.s thanks to @versharma for helping me get this poem out there!
I’m so honored to have had the opportunity to write the foreword for the new HarperCollins printing of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech! It was an incredibly special experience to re-visit this iconic work in today’s context, and it’s my hope that readers will enjoy Dr. King’s words in this new edition, releasing June 14th!
