Has been 47 days since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Being constantly tired is now part of daily life and somehow feels pretty normal. The constant research, shoot features and constant communication with Getty news editor @maralxdeghati are the new normal as we work on getting accurate coverage of what is known to be the biggest refugee exodus since WW2. More than 2.5 million refugees are now living in Poland after the Russian invasion of Ukraine since February 24, 2022.
This post is about hope. Among all the drastic images we see coming from Ukraine and refugees arriving in Ukraine's neighbouring countries, we also can find beauty and hope.
The Green Hotel owned by Justyna, 70 years-old, has suspended operations due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Located 25 km from Poland's second-biggest city, Krakow, the influx of 150,000 Ukrainians fleeing war, means an increase of the city's population by 20% in just a few weeks. Justyna, with the help of her daughter, Karolina, granddaughter Wiktoria, and four new local hires, are now housing 44 displaced Ukrainians of which 22 are children and three are pregnant women. Through her local network, Justyna secured medical appointments, taxpayer identification numbers and bank accounts for all the guests. Ukrainian women began preparing their national dishes such as dumplings and sweets and through the Green Hotel social media pages every day dozens of food dishes are sold for the local community and the income is distributed amongst the women and for hotel expenditures.
