Around four thousand homes along the Kent coast in England could be lost to rising sea levels over the next 30 years, with the areas around swale and Dover expected to be most affected. Researchers predict that the UK could could face a 35cm rise in sea level by 2050 and Sir James Bevan, the chief executive of the Environment Agency has stated that some of the country's seaside towns and villages might have to be abandoned because of rising waters and coastal erosion. | #GettyImagesNews

LGBTQA+ Pride Month: Harvey Milk
Harvey Milk, born May 22, 1930, was the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. During his eleven months in office as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors he fought against anti-gay initiatives and sponsored a bill banning discrimination in public accommodations, housing, and employment on the basis of sexual orientation. On November 27, 1978, Milk was assassinated by Dan White, a disgruntled former city supervisor who cast the sole vote against Milk’s bill. Milk became an icon in San Francisco and a martyr in the gay community. His political career centered on making government responsive to individuals, gay liberation, and the importance of neighborhoods to the city.
The City of San Francisco has paid tribute to Milk by naming several locations after him, including Harvey Milk Plaza and Harvey Milk Terminal 1, the world's first airport terminal named after a leader of the LGBTQ community. He was included in the "Time 100 Heroes and Icons of the 20th Century" as "a symbol of what gays can accomplish and the dangers they face in doing so". The Advocate listed Milk third in their "40 Heroes" of the 20th century issue, quoting Dianne Feinstein, "His homosexuality gave him an insight into the scars which all oppressed people wear. He believed that no sacrifice was too great a price to pay for the cause of human rights." In 2009, Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution to the gay rights movement. This month we celebrate Harvey Milk as a human rights and LGBTQA+ pioneer.
