Repost from @irpatnih: No, this isn't the famous eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. It's actually a close-up image of the eye of an adult zebrafish, with the color red marking the blood vessels and blue marking the lymphatic vessels, which shuttle fluid and immune cells into and out of the eye. The image was taken using a powerful microscope that uses lasers to illuminate the fish. Understanding blood and lymphatic vessel development and function in the eye is important for understanding and treating some human eye diseases and disorders. In addition, these vessels are thought to play a role in other illnesses like cancer.⠀
