I found these boys playing in the river on the side of the main rode in Masantol, Pampanga, Philippines. They were 12 years old and they didn’t attend school. They work as bicycle taxi drivers in town to help provide for their families. The cost per customer on a pedi cab is usually a flat fee from PHP 10-30 per person, equivalent to USD .20-.65 cents.
Before you feel sorry for them, just know they were happy. No, they didn’t have much money- but they have each other, they have community, they have their health and they sure as hell have a work ethic like no other- just to survive.
Let’s ask ourselves… What if everything was stripped away from us? What would you do to survive? What practical skills do you have to make a living at bare minimum? Are we physically and mentally conditioned to endure hardship?
Sometimes our everyday jobs aren’t enough to answer these questions.
So yes, spend more time on that hobby of yours. Sign up for that class you’ve always wanted to take. Start training for that marathon that you’ve always wanted to run.
Because remember, there are some people out there that are so poor, all they have is money.
