Canoeing National Championship this weekend. James was so instrumental in making positive changes in the sport and always remained fully committed to the canoeing community. Canoeing was his passion and he is thoroughly missed. The British Canoeing Federation decided to rename the Senior Lady trophy after James. It is now called the Smythe Sword. I was invited with Ollie to present the medals and trophies. It was a real honour and also a great comfort to be surrounded by James’s friends. I know his legacy will live on and he’ll never be forgotten.
