She is an incredible ceramicist, arguably one of the greatest, and over the years she has become a close friend whom I admire and look up to. As the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded last year Magdalene and I found the time for long dialogues and discussions. Being able to sit at a kitchen table and engage in a creative conversation with someone whom I respect so much was invigorating; it sparked ideas. In June of last year, when London was briefly reopened, I saw a show at the Corvi-Mora Gallery by a young American artist living in the UK, Shawanda Corbett. In the centre of the gallery was a platform filled with totemic sculptures embellished with geometric forms; vessels representing. I mentioned Shawanda’s work to Magdalene and she knew of her as well. I feel so lucky to have encountered these two artists, born continents and generations apart, both exploring the idea of the body and its physicality and the notion of pots as physical vessels yet also vessels of information. It was incredible to feel the profound power and influence objects can have on you. I rediscovered the excitement I found curating at The Hepworth Wakefield. Through discussions with Magdalene and looking at Shawanda’s paintings like Chair with plastic cover, I became fixated on this idea of the two-dimensional becoming three; of the paintings being translated into blankets which then become tapestries that take on the form of the body.
