Bocconi University, Milan, 2002-08. Architects: Grafton Architects, 2020 Pritzker Prize Laureates (Founded 1978 by Yvonne Farrell (b. 1951 County Offaly IRE) and Shelley McNamara (b. 1952 Lisdoonvarna IRE)). This lovely project is powerful, thoughtful, interesting, and generous. It presents both a clear edge to the city as well as a welcoming invitation to explore its public courtyard spaces. The fragmentation of the exterior masses helps it fit into the scale of the neighborhood while maintaining its own abstract identity, separated from the historical context. From the architects’ statement: “The idea was to make two worlds, one hovering over the other, with the space of the city flowing between. We took the public space of the through the building bringing with it the stone floor of Milan.This opens the university to the life of the city.
