New Urban Campus for Bocconi University, Milan, 2019. Architects: SANAA, 2010 Pritzker Prize Laureates (founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima (b. 1956 Hitachi JP - ) and Ryue Nishizawa (b. 1966 Tokyo –). Light and airy and dematerialized and barely there - like Sanaa knows how to do. The new campus is made from soft forms that bubble across the lawn, connected by the lightest possible covered canopy. Each building is covered with a layer of undulating metal mesh and has an interior courtyard - which the architects point out is typical in Milanese architecture. The overall strategy recalls other wiggly and canopied work by Sanaa - for example Okayama University or Grace Farms, but here the idea seems to bear its ripest fruit since the scale of the campus allows for a clearly cohesive interior quadrangle, a separate and lighter world than the surrounding city. The circuit of inter-connecting covered walkways lend themselves especially to exploration by bicycle because, at some speed, the individual round objects re-establish themselves in changing relationships in time. #architecture#architecturalphotography#architecturephotograph#architectures#modernist#modern#modernarchitecture#historyofarchitecture#historyofmodernism#milano#milan#milanarchitecture#tectonicexpression#urbanplanning#Bocconiuniversity#Bocconi#sanaa#contemorary#contemporaryarchitecture#Kazuyosejima#sejima#Ryuenishizawa#Nishizawa#bubbles#pritzkerprize#pritzker
