I wanted my first post of 2022 to be something special, so today it's time to share with you the most incredible oceanic encounter of my life!
It was last year, in May, when a pod of orcas that I had been following for 2 days decided to feed on bottlenose dolphins, a very rare encounter that I had always dreamed of but I was also very far from imagining how spectacular it would be to witness the predation from start to finish.
Even if it has become something "common" to observe orcas around the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, each encounter remains unique.
Being able to witness the feeding behavior of the ocean's greatest predators is simply amazing.
Transient and offshore killer whales are the two most common ecotypes encountered in the area. They have been observed feeding on whales, sharks, rays, dolphins, turtles, sunfish, and other pelagic animals, but although orcas can be observed year round in the area (no specific season), no resident killer whales live around Baja California and encounters remain unpredictable.
Transient and resident orcas differ in many ways, including the types of food they eat, their social structures, languages, behaviors, home ranges, and even their appearance.
