The Dutch city of Haarlem has voted to stop advertisers using public spaces to promote products that contribute to climate change. As part of the city’s effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve public health, the ban will ensure that Haarlem’s buses, shelters and public billboards and information screens aren’t used for the advertising of meat, holiday flights, fossil fuels or cars that run on fossil fuels.
Ziggy Klazes, a councillor from the GroenLinks party, who drafted the new law, didn’t realise it would be a world’s first when she proposed it.
She told the Haarlem105 radio channel: “We are not about what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people want to continue eating meat, fine but we can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and then encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause.
