CARD READING: these tips are for beginners. Jumping into the world of Tarot can be overwhelming. There are so many decks and styles of reading out there. If I had to advise someone who was starting from scratch, these are the tips I would give them:
1. Pick one deck and stick with it. If you’re going to read cards, you have know the deck you’re using inside and out—and that takes time.
2. Memorize the image on each card. By this I mean you should know what each card looks like without having it in front of you. For example, if I say “7 of Swords,” you should be able to instantly call the image of that card to mind.
3. After you’ve memorized the image of each card, give them nicknames. These are entirely personal to you. So use whatever associations are meaningful to you.
4. Use index card to memorize card meanings. Yes, you can use cards to learn the cards. They work! That’s why people invented cards in the first place, as a teaching and memory aid.
5. Combine traditional meanings with personal associations. I sometimes hear people debate the relative importance of the traditional divinatory meanings versus personal and intuitive meanings. The answer is you need to know both. You start with what came before you, and then you develop your own style.
6. Practice 3 card spreads. 3 card spreads are versatile and usually give you all you need. Reading Tarot spreads is about identifying patterns. One card draws can’t give you a pattern, and in 10 card spreads the patterns are too complex for beginners. 3 cards is the Goldilocks zone.
7. Do practice readings for celebrities, politicians and your favorite book, film or TV characters. For example, what would have happened to Walter White if he never met Jesse? How would have his life gone? Or, how would have Jesse’s life gone if he never met Walter? Draw 3 cards and see what you see.
