The exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery is now open, I will be popping in at lunchtime today if anyone else would like to say hello. It was amazing to see so many people at the private view this week - wish I’d made a couple of snaps, great to see you all. This is #13 from Verse II, overall there are 57 works across the three Verses.

Opening this evening !
Nicholas Hughes: The Sound of Space Breathing
27 May - 24 July
For Hughes, the art of looking is akin to the art of listening and his series’ often follow musical or poetic lines. The Sound of Space Breathing is structured in verses inspired by the lyricism of the natural world and the rhythm of his own physical movement through the landscape.

Having just built my new website (linked in profile) you will now find the text supporting the work in the ‘Writings’ section which expands upon the environmental concerns that continue to drive my practice. ‘How do we set about repairing our dysfunctional relationship to Nature....’

Install day for our new Nicholas Hughes solo exhibition!
Drawn from his latest body of work created over seven years, the images represent a photographic journey both literally and figuratively. Using his immediate landscape as both a meditative and inspirational resource, Hughes regularly set out with his large-format camera travelling the many footpaths around his home leading to the Cornish coast. The resulting photographs offer deeply subjective, almost transcendental impressions of these journeys, serving as a diaristic record as well as a personal reflection on the urgent need for humans to repair their relationship with nature.
If you would like to join us and Nicholas Hughes for the private view this Thursday evening, please do get in touch 🥂 [email protected] 🥂

There is something mesmeric in the drying down of a wet print, the analogue process - being an altogether slower production allowing for qualities of contemplation throughout - the finished (dry) silver gelatin print can be seen at @photolondonfair today.
@tpgprintsales "Drawn from his latest body of work created over seven years, the images represent a photographic journey both literally and figuratively.
Rendered in silvery greys and deep blacks, the prints are luminous in quality and reveal the rich tonal range of natural light. Each image is an invitation to consider the potential of landscape, whether that be the shimmer of condensation on a branch, the close knit canopies of foliage, or the shift in natural forms on reaching the coast where he captures both the force and stillness of the sea.
Technically, Hughes also pushes the limits of his craft, exploiting the photomechanical in the darkroom, often layering imagery to create new, magical scenes that evoke the emotional reality of his environment."

If you are fortunate enough to be attending Photo London this week you will find a selection of works from my finally completed series ‘The Sound of Space Breathing’ on Stand F12 with The Photographers’ Gallery.
During the recent printing of these works @bayeux_ltd I was continuously absorbed in the final stage of the Photographic process as new details emerged through enlargement. Using a large format camera to produce 5x4’’ negatives allows for detail that is perhaps not always seen by the naked eye to emerge with scale. These features enhance the sensory feel I am trying to engender in my response to Nature.
Whereas the human eye darts about in its absorption of detail the camera lens records all with equal precedence, once translated to a silver gelatin print format in the darkroom the larger works take on a cinematic feel that bares repeated looking, renewed under differing lighting conditions as it is through the degree of attention given.
Having spent so long looking to create this series it interests me to gauge the response of those new to the work, if you are seeing these works in London, I would encourage you to take in the detail and if not there this week, then you may have the chance to see the work at The Photographers’ Gallery @tpgprintsales from May 27th until July 24th.

Working alongside master printer Roy Bass @bayeux_ltd to bring the forthcoming exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery @tpgprintsales to life. Printed from a 5x4" large format negative to a scale of 32x40'' this work is from Verse III of the new series 'The Sound of Space Breathing.'

Delighted to announce the completion and exhibition of ‘The Sound of Space Breathing’ on show at The Photographers’ Gallery, London @tpgprintsales from May 27th – July 24th. With an opportunity to see some of the work in advance at @photolondonfair 12 – 15th May.
This three ‘Verse’ body of work runs across the years 2015 – 2022 and continues my exploration of the human relationship to Nature with the primary concern being how we set about repairing our dysfunctional relationship with Nature and fully waken to what we are offered by return.
The lengthy period of production is perhaps the anthesis of the frenetic pace at which the world increasingly relies - to both our own and our natural habitat’s detriment.
Made via large format film camera and realised for the first time in black and white I have recently been working with @bayeux (pictured) to enlarge my own handprints to exhibition scale.
Will aim to offer more of the detail behind the show over the next few weeks.
Thankyou to Iris Fernandes for the portrait.
