“Escape” was released today 41 years ago [July 31st 1981]
“Escape” is Journey’s seventh studio album. It’s easily Journey’s milestone album, one of their biggest. Has sold to diamond status and it contains hits like “Don’t Stop Believin’” (over a billion streams on Spotify, huge!👏🏼], “Stone in Love”, “Mother, Father” and my favourite “Who’s Crying Now”, easily because of Neal’s guitar solo at the end, it’s magnificent. This album turned Journey into superstars in the US!🤟🏼👏🏼🔥
It may seem weird but Journey has never had a #1 song, no not even DSB which didn’t really become big until the 2000s where it truly got it’s renaissance. The song that got the closest was “Open Arms” at #2. “Escape” was a #1 album though, which does make up for it a bit.
Here I have the clear vinyl which was released as a Walmart exclusive. Like most re-releases this was produced by Steve Perry (and also John Jackson for this specific release.) As you know US department stores doesn’t ship to Europe, so I got this while I was in the Washington DC in May at Byrdland Records, if you’re in the area I do recommend taking a visit. Neal St. was right by the record shop I bought it in, made it feel somewhat meant to be, the same spelling and everything.
