Big or small?
I hope by now anyone following me will know that I like to draw/paint animals…and that I focus on a realistic style. It’s just the thing I’ve always loved doing!
What I do love to change around though, is the scale of my work.
You may have seen some of my miniature drawings in my current 100 endangered species project or the ginormous larger than life size buffalo painting I currently have on my wall!
I find changing the scale and the medium (I work in coloured pencils and acrylic) helps me to continue to challenge myself and discover new ways of working. It also allows me to appreciate the animals I depict in an entirely different way each time. When working small I focus mostly on their shape, the values and any stand out features…. And when I work on a larger scale, I like to focus on the tiny details like how the light hitting a single whisker hair can make it change from gold to white!
There are so many amazing things in the natural world, I know I will never run out of things to be inspired by no matter what size I work on!
Have you ever tried working really big or really small?
