🌈 WHY WE HAWAII 🌈
To wrap up our #hawaiivacation, I’m sharing the real reason for visiting the Land of Aloha. It’s not the amazing beaches or mouthwatering island eats. It’s to visit my grandmother, Lola (which is the Filipino word for grandmother).
We happened to visit during her 94th birthday, and it was a treat to celebrate with her. Being a military family, I spent most my life living far away from Lola. Giving her a gift in person instead of mailing a card was the icing on the cake of our trip.
For her gift, we stopped by the Kahuku farm stands to put together a fresh fruit basket. The stands are located right off the side of the Kamehameha Highway along Oahu’s north shore. You can choose from a bounty of locally grown fruits and veggies like mangos, corn, bananas and grapefruit. Lola’s favorite fruit is papaya, so I made sure to stock up on some giant ones. And I had to grab a fresh coconut to sip on the road.
As quaint as the farm stand is, I remember a decade ago when it was less polished and commercialized. A literal hut on the side of the road. It’s still worth a stop to support local growers. The fruit stand of years past will remain a memory — just like the great ones we made on yet another fabulous trip to Hawaii.
