“I know it's fun to play hairdresser at home and costs
way way less than going to the salon. I get it. I did it
too when I was 17. I also wrecked my hair later trying
to get the blackest black out of my hair. I'Il never
shame anyone who colors at home. I don't know their
finances or their experiences in the salon. Maybe that
box was the one thing they can use to feel better
about their hair. It is what it is. As professionals we
know it's a fighter coming out so a test strand is a
must. It's a preview for their entire appointment.” @abigailbazzoli

Closing your books doesn’t make you cooler & for a long time, I thought it did.
Its not a goal or flex.
It doesn’t prove success/talent/ability.
It doesn’t impress potential clients. In fact, it steers them away. Why? Because there are 100 other searchable stylists who’s books ARE open.
& by “closing books,” I mean: ignoring new client texts/applications, disabling client inquiries, posting in bio/social etc.
Things to try BEFORE closing your books:
➕ GET AN ASSISTANT. And I know its not that simple. Finding, training & trusting an assistant doesn’t come with out more work— but in my opinion, it’s worth it.
➕ BECOME SELECTIVE.
Keep allowing new client requests. & if their hair goals/inspiration doesn’t excite or entice you—- don’t do it. Create a text that you can copy/paste that politely says “you are not able to take on new clients at this time, but feel free to reach out in a few months…blah blah”
Don’t let inspiring art pass you by!
➕ RAISE YOUR PRICES.
Supply & demand, baby.
Yes this is intimidating to most stylists & Yes you may lose clients. That’s just business. And trust me when I say this concept i still work on myself.
⚠️There are certainly reasons to close your books—family matters, health/mental health, a new venture, etc.
BUT just because your business is busy, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to completely close yourself off to potential clients. Because the reality is, clients will come and go in your career. Some you’ll have almost forever (the OGs) — bless them. And of course your long-term clients, long-distance clients, clients that get around, one-appt-stand clients— all the relationships 🙃
But the one thing they all have in common is they have lives. They move. They start family’s. They buy houses. They have struggles. Pandemicssss happen. They even try new stylists. *gasp*
Don’t close off potential business entirely— because you never know when you’re going to need to rebuild or revamp your clientele ✔️
