🇮🇹 Via Appia Antica, Roma.

🇬🇧 Appian Way
The Appian Way was the first of the great Roman roads to take its name from the magistrate who had built it. In 312 BC Appius Claudius Caecus built this road axis connecting Rome to Capua in order to allow the rapid movement of Roman troops to the south on the occasion of the Second War Sannitica (326-304 BC). Subsequently the track was extended until the port of Brindisi, which provided to Rome a direct link to the East. This extension trasformed the Appian Way into the most important way in the Roman world; in fact the historian Strabo called it "regina viarum". The Appia Way began at Porta Capena, near the Circus Maximus, and continued to its destination in a linear and easy way. Along the road there were numerous funerary monuments that travelers could admire.
