What happens when a wild animal in one country accidentally stows away in a vehicle headed for another? This was the reality for Sarah who discovered a yellow-bellied marmot hiding in her car after she returned from her trip to Colorado. When animal controls in two cities and a very nervous mechanic couldn’t help, she called TWC.
Our Rescue Team was able to safely extract the accidental traveller who was brought to our centre. Aside from being quite frightened and thin after travelling without food for six days, the marmot was in good health. But her journey was far from over.
Yellow-bellied marmots are not native to Toronto and she would need to return to Colorado. Thus began the long almost two-month process of getting the high-stress patient home – figuring out the exact location where the marmot came from, finding a flight that would take her, contacting wildlife rehabilitators in Colorado and more!
