Nap time on the drift ice. One of the most beautiful bears we have seen so far this season. He was big and healthy and has somehow managed to escape the incessant helicopters and tranquilizer darts for “science”. Perhaps only because he is a male. They can not collar the males as they have a different shaped neck and head and the collar can come off. We are concerned about how many females are collared and painted with massive brown numbers on their backs and ear tags in both the cubs and mothers ears. We find it difficult to see females who are actually unmarked now. How many animals must they chase with helicopters and tag?? How many is too many in a healthy population of bears? Meanwhile small tourism companies like us who bring 12 people in two zodiacs, that sit quietly and watch are being considered the ones disturbing the wildlife according to the guys above?? They want to place ridiculously crazy distance restrictions. Does this bear look bothered to you? Do any of my bears look like I am disturbing them in any single one photograph of mine?? We sat in zodiacs while a mother and cub ate their reindeer peacefully… that is until a helicopter came and scared them away from their hard earned meal. Sometimes science is not the best for the animals and respectful tourism creates so much more awareness. Our customers are now very aware of how the bears react to helicopters as they watched. I am not a scientist and I believe in science but perhaps we should rethink some of the science and how they are approaching the bears too. We keep a safe respectful distance and take pride in not bothering the bears or any of the wildlife for that matter. #science#naptime#isbjørn#svalbard#theimaged#exploretocreate#depthsofearth#roamtheplanet#greatnorthcollective#norwaynature#canonnordic#svalbardlife#conservation#spitzbergen#natgeowild#naturephotography#awesome_earth#photojeanettics#respect#bbcwildlifepotd#photojeanettics#spring#natgeo#arctic#fjord#polarbear#icebreaker#travelphotography#expedition#wildlife#awareness
