Uh…I think we’re calling this one Weirdo Wednesday. Feast your eyes on this 1959 Hagstrom Deluxe 90 in Blue Sparkle.
Absolutely no hate to all my Hags out there, these are just so interesting to us. Hagstrom originally started as a Swedish music store which mostly specialized in accordions, that is until 1958. The eldest Hagstrom son traveled abroad to the US and came back home raving about Rock n Roll music being the future. At the time Hagstrom was a Gibson distributor, so they even dissected and studied a Les Paul Goldtop. Hagstrom became one of the first companies to manufacture electric guitars outside of the US. They began with a slew of solid body guitars fitted with the sparkle and pearloid finishes they used for their accordions.
This particular guitar was not originally sold in the US. In an effort to better market the guitar, US export models were sold under “Goya Guitar Company” with their logo. As this guitar still has the Hagstrom logo, it is safe to say it was originally sold in Europe. The front of this guitar is done in a sparkle finish, but the rest of the body is all a pearloid wrap. These four single coils are mounted on a metal frame and separated in the middle by a piece of foil. You will notice all of the buttons on this frame too, there are six buttons for tone controls and two rotary pots. Another interesting design element - the fretboard is actually acrylic. The frets look huge because you can see them through the clear fretboard, when in reality they feel more like a fretless wonder. The neck is a comfortable medium C, and coupled with these frets it is fast playing! This guitar is extremely loud acoustically and very light, as it is fully hollow except for a small square block for support. The back of the headstock even features a convenient pick holder!
