This year's theme for International Youth Day 2022 is “Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages.” International Youth Day 2022: Every year, International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 to mark the #contribution of today's youth to the development of society.
What do you think of when you hear the theme #intergenerational#solidarity? One of the first things that comes to mind is just a general belief that older generation really need to listen to the youth? Checking in with young people is vital. Youth also need more connection with their #elders. There's definitely a huge gap between #youth aged 15 to 24 and adults over the age of 60. Just imagine the #patience and the #wisdom that would be present in those conversations. One #study in Europe on underage drinking discovered that many of the #teenagers consuming alcohol also complained about a loss of #connection with their #parents and #family members. In response #community programs were created and there was a great push for parents to be able to get home to be able to spend time with their children after school. As a result there was a noticeable decline in underage drinking.
Oftentimes parents, #teachers and adults think that just by being around young people that there is a connection. Many conversations between youth and older adults end up with adults talking at the youth instead of talking WITH them.
We will see much more #harmony in the world when undo #ageism and bridge the gaps in between generations. Please share any ideas in the comments.
