ADHD'ers are often surrounded by ableism. From young age we might encounter our peers, teachers or even family members who feed us with critical and negative feedback regarding who we are, or how they see ADHD. These messages can become internalised, and form into limiting negative self-beliefs. 😟
This internalised ableism can stand in a way of showing ourselves self-compassion and finding solutions to ADHD challenges. It takes time to undo the idea that we need to be perfect, always productive and not be consumed by guilt and shame.
Here are some ideas that can help to untangle this pattern:
💕 Connect with other ADHD'ers
📙 Share your story, allow yourself to express your feelings through art, writing, reading or any other form of creativity.
💬 Change how you talk to yourself. Encourage the self-compassionate voice to come out more. Journal, meditate, use affirmations, get to know yourself. Work on liking who you are.
🎨 Do things that are good for you, connect with yourself.
🧑🤝🧑 Surround yourself with supportive people. Set boundaries with those who feed the internalised ableism.
🧠 Learn more about ADHD, and accept that there are certain limitations that might require a different approach. But just because it's different, it doesn't mean it's wrong. Befriend your ADHD brain and see what it needs.
💓 Allow yourself to heal the hurt of the past.
