Farewell today to the magical Julee Cruise (1956-2022), whose voice enveloped the dreamy and surreal mood of David Lynch’s work in the 1980s and early 1990s, including Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. Listen back to ‘Falling’ or ‘Mysteries of Love’ and this strange softly cushioned music wraps itself around the images in such a powerful and unforgettable way that I can’t hear her music without seeing the images. Working with composer Angelo Badalamenti she gained a cult following for this body of work. Although she continued to have a fruitful and influential career after this time, for me and others it’s this early work that continues to have such a cultural resonance.
