A few photos from Honolulu last week including the church where my grandparents were married (the building that looks like a Japanese castle), my dad in front of my parents' apartment, and irises that my grandma arranged for the butsudan for my grandpa. Her ikebana skills are amazing.
The last time I was there it was the beginning of March 2020 and I had planned to live with my family there for a few months and make a lot of work for my grad school program. But that obviously didn't happen--I kind of fled in a panic a few weeks later back to Oregon where I've been since. So I don't have a whole thesis show of this work, but hopefully I'll add a few more photos each time I return. For now I'm full of lau lau and still have some of the Pacific lodged in my ears.
Images from my Hanafuda series are featured in the spring issue of @aperturefnd, and unbelievably, on the cover as well.
Lucy Ives (@l_cy_v_s ), an inspiration and one of my favorite writers, wrote a lovely accompanying text for the feature.
I don't really believe in "individual" achievement—these photographs would not have been possible to make without @kanastas , @hisnameisricardo, @mccraemark, and @killertomatoguy. They were all literally there, holding flowers, hiking up mountains with me, hoisting a chicken into the air...things of that nature.
ありがとうございます!!
Some XC camping with @evanbenallyatwood for @arcteryxportland
A few weeks ago we skied up Ghost Ridge, went down to Upper Twin Lake, and set up camp in waist-deep snow. It felt like a nice little send off for winter, but now I’m ready for some warmth 🌞
Saying goodbye to our farmhouse utopia this week 💔
We moved to @killertomatoguy's no-till farm in Hood River 10 months ago on a whim and haven't looked back. These are some of the things I will miss.
My book, The Potter Becomes The Pot, is finally shipping from @tisbooks!
Sorry about the ~supply chain~ delays…
Also it was named one of the 14 best books of spring 2021 by Vanity Fair 🌞
